Many carriers like JetBlue and Virgin have turned the screws on these websites and they offer better rates if you buy direct from them; so shop around! You want to be sure you get the cheapest deal on your flight.

One of the other wildly swinging variables about booking your flights is the time in which you do it. Often times you can score some great last minute deals; others you’ll pay multiple times the cost the nearer you get. With some sites, you can get quoted one price and you go back the same day and it’s swung around to such a degree that you’re not even sure if it’s worth it. By and large the rule is the sooner you buy your tickets (3-5 weeks out) the better.
