When it comes to having guns around the home, there is the need to make sure every member of the household understands the importance of proper storage and gun safety. Here are some basics that you need to discuss with all family members before you choose to bring guns into the home.
The first bit of education about guns that needs to be given to all family members is that guns are not for play. While this may seem like stating the obvious to some people, the fact is that other adults need to hear this as much as any children in the house. Far too many people do not taking owning guns as seriously as they should. Getting into the habit of not treating a gun with respect is asking for trouble. Prevent that habit from forming from the very beginning by making it clear that guns are not to be left lying around even for a moment. Second, guns are to be under lock and key. A pistol lying in a drawer in the master bedroom is asking for something irreversible to occur. While you may have bought guns for safety, your household will be much safer if you choose to keep the gun in a space that is locked. Certainly, it can be in your bedroom or any other space that you can get to quickly if necessary. Just make sure it is locked and access to the key is limited. Third, guns and ammunition do not get stored in the same place. Create two separate storage areas and make sure you can progress from one to the next with ease if you need to do so. A young one who manages against all odds to get to your gun and finds ammunition there with it has all he or she needs to make a mistake that will change lives forever. Don’t run the risk of having this sort of thing happen. Keep your guns and ammo in different spots, both under lock and key. There are number of good reasons for having a gun around the house, ranging from hobbies to protection for you and your loved ones. Along with the privilege of owning guns comes the responsibility to properly care for the guns and make sure they do not fall into the wrong hands. By making sure you keep your guns locked and secure, and having a separate hiding place for the ammunition, you go a long way toward making sure all member of the family understand how serious gun ownership really is. |
