We live in a totally connected universe; everyone, everywhere, seems to know everyone’s business in synch. If we all just turn the dial a few degrees to one side, we’ll be allowed a glimpse into a world without internet: if you pose this hypothesis to anyone born after 1989 they’ll more than likely laugh in your face and tell you no such world exists.
But for those of us who grew up on Star Wars and Atari 2600 we remember another day. A better day? We can not say. It was certainly a different time. I’ll remember that no one in my neighborhood had a computer let alone the internet which wasn’t available for home use until years later. But even still, this world with no internet is a time we can’t go back to; it’s like we’ve opened Pandora’s box and now that the internet’s been released upon the world; now that we know it’s absolute power over persons, were able to get a little bit of perspective and at least try to rationally deal with it. One of the easiest ways to deal with the internet is the cheapest ways possible. With so much expenditures costing us so much regardless, having to pay for your internet is just another thorn in your side. While you always want to assure you’re able to use the internet when you need it, there are a number of cheap options for internet access that can make your life a little easier. If you live near a public library or space where there is free internet and you don’t need to be “always connected” you can get free internet when you’re there. For many though, they either have a desktop or don’t want to be always running around with their laptops to strange places. If you live in an apartment complex or building there are often freebies that go along with your residing there that include free internet access to all residents. Another, more sly way to get free internet access, is to pirate it from a neighbor, it may require you use your online services in a particular room but its one cost saving measure. Beyond that there are a number of cheap internet providers; the cheapest is dial up. DSL is a little more expensive; bother DSL and dial up require that you have a phone line dedicated for the exclusive or partial use of your internet connection. Cable is another route for you to go but even many cable companies are splitting the basic cable, high speed internet, and phone service into a three part deal that’s more cost effective for you to use rather than having just cable and internet. Cheap internet providers are available en masse in the US and UK but you need to be wary of ISP’s who tell you a great story but end up giving you merely a song. |
