Nintendo (nicknamed Nitendo by Internet users in a hurry) actually has roots dating back to 1889, when Fusajiro Yamauchi created some handmade playing cards under the name brand. Though it took Nitendo many years to branch out into video games, they do have the distinction of being the oldest company in the video game console market. As of the end of the 2006 year, Nitendo has sold over 387 million units of hardware and 2.2 billion units of software all over the world. The Game Boy hand held system was the top selling portable console for a long while, selling a then record setting 70 million units.
