If you’re looking for an alternative method of transportation that’s both efficient and affordable why not consider heading out to the tracks? Not the “race tracks” the train tracks; with thousands of miles of track and an even greater number of train cars running at any given moment, trains are the affordable, albeit more time consuming alternative to flight.
But getting a train ticket, if you’ve got a little extra time, may be a good idea; especially if you’re traveling a few hundred miles or less (the time spent going through security at an airport, may make the difference negligible) as you’re able to do a number of things that are difficult on an airplane and impossible in a car such as sleep and get work done or a combination of the two. Cheap train tickets are something of an anomaly in the USA as our Hummer driving, road hogging culture of SUV’s and Harley Davidson’s and Chevy Pickups likes to have full control of the road we drive on; the routes we take, and the passive nature of trains; potential delays and such makes us continue to drive around everywhere we go and continues to perpetuate the myth that our own control of things like driving obviates other inevitable absolutes like traffic jams and such. The truth about trains is that they run on a schedule for exactly that reason; that they are able to accurately predict when they will depart and when they will arrive. Our European counterparts are much less pig-headed than we are and are much more accepting of the relative lack of control we have over our lives. Or such seems to be their attitude about transit as they sit patiently and wait for the train then accept the fact that there are delays and that their train ticket is only as good as the paper it’s printed on; they’ll get there and they hope to arrive on time, but, as anything, there’s no guarantees. Cheap train tickets in the UK are a lot easier to come by as they exist in far greater number. There is that new underground train that connects France and London in a high speed variety, cheap train tickets in France are more than readily available; not necessarily for that line in particular but the other trains that trolley around the continent are always offering cheap discounts. If you’re an ex-pat or just a tourist and you’re looking for cheap train tickets they are available on trains all over the continent; North America or Europe! |
